Sogndal municipality is located in «Sognefjorden», and is the main centre for education, research and business in Sogn og Fjordane county.
The municipality has appoximately 8 000 inhabitants, and more than 2000 students. The Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) has a campus in Sogndal, and is one of Sogndal’s main employers.
From 1. January 2020, Sogndal will be merged with the neighbour municipalities Leikanger and Balestrand. The new municipality will keep the name Sogndal.
