There are 2900 inhabitants in Austrheim, which is an island community connected by 13 bridges. The municipality is best known for its most important employer; Statoil’s refinery at Mongstad.

Austrheim is an old cultural area with a beautiful coast line. Vardetangen, the westernmost point of the Norwegian mainland, is located in Austrheim. Along the strait Fosnstraumen, there are several settlements from the Stone Age. The strait is also known as a great spot for fishing.
