The municipality of Eidfjord is located at the head of the beautiful fjord, Hardangerfjorden, with only a short distance from the fjord to the mountains.
The municipality stretches over 1500 km2 and has 948 inhabitants.
The largest employer is the municipality itself. The business sector is marked by the fact that Eidfjord is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Western Norway. In addition, a variety of small industries, hydropower and agriculture creates a lot of jobs in the municipality.
Eidfjord has been a municipality since 1977. The power development in the 1970s has resulted in a solid economy and the municipality can provide a wide range of services for its inhabitants. Purchasing land in municipal construction sites is inexpensive, and first-time house builders receive a grant from the municipality. A coordinated care- and nursing service also provides good services for those in need of these.
Large parts of Hardangervidda National Park are situated within the municipality’s borders, and by the fjord steep mountain sides with waterfalls create a dramatic view. Recreation, hunting and fishing are important parts of life in Eidfjord and on nice days you can take a boat trip on the fjord or go swimming. A rich cultural life can be experienced both in Eidfjord and in Hardanger. Cinemas, museums and galleries, exhibitions, local craft traditions and more are all playing a part when it comes to making the region what it is.
